Hero was a jerk By Lulu123 This started out promising. I liked Malina – she seemed like a down-to-earth, confident woman. Rustin was a different story. He just struck me as a cold fish who was constantly giving Malina mixed signals. The only thing I found endearing about him was the way he helped one of Malina’s students get out of a bad home situation.
Spoilers***
Rustin was an absolute jerk for the last half of the book though. He buys the school Malina works at intending to bulldoze it to build a skyscraper. The kids that attend the school have very troubled home lives and the principal is worried because he has no money to find another building so they can relocate. Malina appeals to Rustin for help and while he claims to feel guilty, he continues to follow through with his plan. He even fires Malina from her job because he found some incriminating info about her and her last job. He never asks her for her version of the facts. Instead he offers the school an ultimatum: He’ll let them keep the school but Malina has to be terminated from her position because he wanted to “test” her. That made absolutely no sense to me. Supposedly he grew up believing that all women were heartless and were only using him for his money which is supposed to explain why he did the hot/cold act with Malina. At one point Malina tells him he’s nothing but a scared little boy and that she pities him. I couldn’t agree more. The callousness of his little test resulted in Malina losing her job, two of her underpriveledged students dropping out of school, and her having to pack up and move to a new town. When did Malina fall in love with this swine? Better yet, why? She ends up moving to New York and THREE months later, Rustin comes to visit her and confesses his love. I think he apologized but it was just too little too late for me.

Somehow Jerk Guy worked for this Story By bibliophile2011 Malina’s Price was good… not great but kept your interest and was written well. This plot involves a good girl starting over, trying to make ends meet and rich guy who has it “all” …falling for each other reluctantly. This storyline has been well played out by many authors. Using the backdrop of a school for troubled teens, recently purchased by a rich developer (with less than altruistic motives), was a nice change though.
Another reviewer pointed out that the lead hero was a jerk, but I think it worked for the story. Somehow in my warped brain, Rustin acting like a jerk actually kept me entertained and engrossed in the story. He kept flittering between nice guy and a**clown. I kept wondering if he would continue to be a jerk or if he was going to get over his inability to trust and love Malina the way she deserved. I think this brought some originality and creativity to an otherwise tired and stale plot.
Worthy of three stars… but if you prefer your leading man to be faultless, attentive, and emotionally secure, this book is not for you.

Good read By Kiahana I enjoyed this book for the most part. There was alot of hot chemistry and the characters were from the real world, which is a plus in my book since I think it adds to the story if you beleive it can actually happen. The man, Rustin, is kind of a jerk in moments, but he goes well with the main character, Malina’s, shy side and makes her come out of her safe shell.
It was worth the read and I will be checking out this author’s other books.
