I built this list after my father remunerated assorted dollars for a classic that was available free on Kindle. Everybody who loves classic creative writing of recognized artisti value knows that it may be mixing up to find out-of-copyright copies for free with so some people attempting to trade paid versions of the same titles. Recent updates include the most popular titles from the Bronte sisters, Twain, Dickens and Dumas that Amazon only freed as free Kindle eBooks in the last few months.

This list of over 1,600 free classic eBooks on Amazon works best works best on Kindle 3, Touch, Fire and iPad. If you click the linked title, it will fetch you directly to the Amazon product page for the free eBook in the Kindle store. If you are using a newer Kindle, an iPad, or other eBook reader with a decent web browser, you may sign into your Amazon account and download the eBook immediately.

Kindle Touch 3G readers will have to use a WiFi connection for downloading the books. If you are reading on an older Kindle 2 or Kindle 1 (which haven’t been sold for years), you may add the book to your Wish List and the next time you use a computer to access Amazon, you may have the Wish List items sent to your Kindle for free.

Nice job on a useful resource

Morris Rosenthal has done a nice job here in curating an excellent resource for readers, one that would have saved me hundreds of dollars back in my days as an English major. Most of the times you spend a buck on the internet you never get it back. This dollar will come back to you again and again and again.

I recommend downloading Free Books For Kindle and KINDLE FREE FOR ALL) directly to the Kindle app on your PC or Mac and using them there for easy downloading of many a terrific book.

Really useful and will save you a bundle

Sure there are free books on Amazon, but finding them is not always so easy. This application helpfully alphabetizes a host of important books by author’s name and then by title for each individual author. I have it on my IPAD and you just click on the book you are interested in, and it puts you right through to Amazon where you can then download it for free. A great application that will pay for itself hundreds of times over!

A Treasure Trove

As a newbie to Kindle (recently received one as a gift) and somewhat overwhelmed with learning what was available for the Kindle, I was delightfully surprised to discover such a thorough list of classics from which to choose. Not just a list, but a lifetime-of-reading classics just one click away… for free! I tested the list with my own lifetime list of classics still “to be read” and in all cases when they weren’t available via this list, an explanatory note was included, stating, for example, that (some of) this author’s works were not yet out of copyright (and therefore not free). The downloads I received through simply clicking the links on my Kindle (3g wireless) all worked fine and immediately. (The links take you to the book listing on Amazon, from where you order the download via your account at a price of $0). The list is alphabetical, by author, and under each author is a further alphabetical list of downloadable links to his/her works available for free. At this point, I’ve only had time to skim through the downloads I’ve received, and so far, they seem free of annoying typos, are easy to navigate, and the poetry has the original line breaks. I would definitely recommend this treasure trove of well-ordered links to anyone wishing to have an almost complete set of classics at their fingertips. You can hardly go wrong with this price of ninety-nine cents! Thanks to Mr. Rosenthal for a superb product: much appreciated.

closing the game ~ back to kindle home

Fun game and kind of addicting. Others commented that they can’t get out without shutting down the Kindle Fire. I had the same problem! Go to “STUFF” then hit options and the Kindle arrow will come up on the bottom. Now you can go back to your home screen without having to shut down your Kindle Fire.

hate this game

My 5-year old added this game to my Kindle Fire. Okay, no big deal since it cost $0.00. I looked it over one evening and I couldn’t get out of it! I had to shut down the Kindle Fire completely to shut the game off. Needless to say that was very annoying. Then this afternoon I was reading my emails when I saw 5 purchases on my Amazon account to my kindle.. YES, my 5 year old bought $25 worth of something for this stupid game! I removed the game remotely and I am very angry at this company for creating a game trap where you cannot get out and can buy your way into points, or whatever.

fun but glitchy

I am enjoying this a lot but I’m having the same problem other folks have noted. I keep trying to visit friends, I get told it needs to download an update by restarting the game but it restarts and I still can’t visit friends. I get the same message again. Aside from that, this has been lots of fun!

Useful, fun, and free… what’s not to like?

Can’t imagine any Kindle owner not signing on for this freebie info source. You get light, fast news items, quickie feature pieces, meaty author interviews, and goofy pictures of lava lamps and trendy adult beverages. Fun stuff all. Even the rhapsodic essays about failed, discontinued automobiles like the Gremlin and the Pacer (inexplicably, a regular feature) are growing on me.

Even if you bought your Kindle just to read e-books and not get news and features (not me… I like everything the Kindle offers), sign up for this free blog generously offered by the Amazon powers-that-be. At the very least, you’ll enjoy the many book suggestions “Amazon Daily” will send your way.

What is with the bulleted lists?

I am pretty pleased with the Amazon daily so far. I do not know if I will change my mind in the future. Below are some details:

Pro #1: It has a post called Reviewing the Reviewers. In this post, snapshots of book reviews from the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, etc, are included. Con #1: The book names are linked to the item detail pages on Amazon, which does not make sense with the Kindle browser, since you have to go through pages of navigation items first. I wonder why they did not link the book names to relevant Kindle store pages.

Pro #2: Pictures included with certain posts are pretty clear. Con #2: Sometimes, on a certain page, you only see a picture, no text at all. I don’t think the pictures should be emphasized so much, unless they are crucial for the posts.

Pro #3: Cooking recipes are included in some posts.
Con #3: (This is the most important one for me!) All bulleted and numbered lists are MESSED UP! More often than not, you will either see bullets with no content, or numbered lists that go 1, 2, 3, 6, 10, 12. I am sure this is due to a conversion problem from HTML to .azw, but I am sure it can be easily fixed as well.

Gosh, I would pay even 5 cents per month

One cent per month? Ok. I bit.

I’m glad I did. Updated several times a day (whenever they feel like blogging) on a wide variety of subjects. The other day an article was about an early 1970s car, and how it influenced later models, etc. We had thoughts on the Grammy Awards, recipes, new devices, book reviews, on and on.

Previously, I would turn the Whispernet (or whatever it is called) off in the morning after receiving my newspapers. Now, I tend to leave it on all day so I can enjoy (or skip, as the case may be) any new Amazon blog.

Why not five stars? Due to the presence, in many articles, of links for you to click: IF you were on a computer. Since the Kindle will not follow those links, they are a bit intrusive at times.

UPDATE: Now its free? Heck, why not.

Purrrrfect

We discovered Sharon Cramer yesterday at our local Fair. She is an amazingly gentle soul who has a genuine love for children and the stories she creates for them. I bought both Lost and Alone and I’m Just Like You. Both are fabulously illustrated and written. I love how Sharon weaves real life situations into a fun story that captures my son’s attention and causes him to think and relate to his own life. I highly recommend both books!!

Tale of a tail on a purple spotted cub leading his new trusty cub pals back home. Adorable and free book. On ipad it is in color and the illustrations are fabulous. Very fun book to read to kids.

App works very well — if you can’t make it work, you don’t know what you’re doing –

I downloaded the paid ($3.99) version of this before checking out the free version, since my experience has often been that free versions are hobbled when paid versions, even at the small nominal fee this one asks for, offer a much experience and functionality. Unfortunately, it often leads to not following up with the fee version.

Anyway, the app does *everything* it promises… from a very comprehensive list of traffic cams (which in and of itself is worth the fee), to being able to access your own home/business IP cams. There is loooong list of camera vendors and cameras, and you should be able to find your specific model rather easily. The setup for the model I have installed (Panasonic BL Series) was simple and succinct, and I was up and running in, literally, less than three minutes from install. You do NOT need to be an IT guru to set up a port forwarding for your camera on your home/business router. It is NOT rocket-science.

The app allows you to view individual cams, or can put you in Matrix view, which allows multiple cams on a single screen. It also allows recording, however, that is NOT defaulted always-on, as suggested by some other reviews. You can also do single shot captures. The app is intuitive, and not difficult at all to find your way around in. There are additional menus which allow you to invoke all the features of your cam, including pan, tilt, sound, zoom, preset positioning, etc., as well as inverting your screen, reversing pan/tilt, select image quality over refresh speed, etc.

Great app — well worth the nominal fee.

Keeping An Eye on The House While Away…

As noted by others, the trial only gives you access to 2 cameras, but is worth testing out to make sure this app will work for your purpose. I purchased the full version of this app to view my home surveillance system on my tablet. This app works perfect and requires very little in the way of set up, all information needed was accessible from the settings screen on my surveillance DVR. Another feature I found awesome was being able to search and view public traffic, beach and city cams without too much effort.

plz read the fine print

amazon’s service net EW policy DOES NOT necessarily mail someone a new kindle before asking for the damaged one back. everyone really does need to read all that fine print on these contracts. for example: service net specifically says, ‘We will replace the original purchased Product specified on your Amazon.com order with a new or REFURBISHED [my emphasis] unit, provided such replacement is authorized and necessitated by Product operational or mecanical failure during normal usage…You must obtain authorization prior to the receipt of a replacement Product by calling 1-877-441-3836…You will be REQUIRED to provide a credit card to secure the return of Your failed Product. If you do not return the failed Product within a reasonable time period (which will be communicated to you at the time of your claim, your credit card will be charged for the replacement unit. Once authorization is obtained, YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO RETURN THE PRODUCT USING A PREPAID SHIPPING LABEL PROVIDED BY US. At Our determination, You will receive a replacement Product of like grade and quality…We reserve the right to replace the Product with a remanufactured or refurbished Product.’

for ADH (accidental damage from handling) issues: service net says, ‘ADH only covers operational or mechanical failure caused by an accident from handling and does not include protection against theft, mysterious disappearance, misplacement, viruses, reckless, abusive, willful or intentional conduct…, cosmetic damage and/or other damage that does not affect the unit functionality, damage caused during shipment between You and Our service providers and ANY OTHER LIMITATIONS LISTED IN THE LIMITATIONS OF COVERAGE SECTION. (there’s lot of goodies there, so plz read that section)…

plz note that if you purchase the square trade EW (extended warranty, pronounced EWWWW) for your kindle (which is actually $39.99, only $10 cheaper than the service net policy), and you submit a claim for accidental damage (the operative word here after all is ‘accidental’ since both policies have disclaimers regarding ‘reckless, abusive, willful or intentional conduct…cosmetic damage, etc.’), YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO PAY A $50 DEDUCTABLE. add that on to the $40 bucks you parted with for the EW and you have half the price of the kindle 3. also, square trade says, ‘If protective items such as covers, carrying cases or pouches, etc., were provided OR MADE AVAILABLE FOR USE WITH PRODUCT, it is expected that You will continually use these product accessories for protection against damage to the product. Abuse is defined as Your intentional non-utilization of protective items during product use…Any resultant damage from this type of treatment in NOT covered by the ADH progam.’

so, gentle readers, it all comes down to that customer service rep that takes your call or handles your claim online.

you can expect your claim to service net to result in this: ‘The use of this coverage (ADH) REQUIRES AN EXPLANATION OF WHERE AND WHEN THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED AS WELL AS A DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTUAL EVENT. FALIURE TO PROVIDE THIS INFORMATION WILL RESULT IN CLAIM DENIAL.’ period, case closed.

be careful with your kindle, use a case or protective pouch, and keep your $40 or $50 bucks to buy new reading material or save up for the next generation. dealing with these EW claims will be frustrating at the very least. kudoos to those above who escaped the pain.

Just say NO!

In this writers humble opinion, and that of nationally recognized and syndicated consumer advocate Clarke Howard– as well as Consumers Report– this is a bad deal for you and totally unnecessary. First of all, IT IS NOT a complete 2 year extended warranty. Read the text carefully. They clearly say in print that it is only in effect AFTER your normal 1 year warranty that comes with the product. So, it is actually only a 1 year extended warranty for a mfg. defective product for $49 dollars. NOT a good deal on a quality product.
Now, with that said, if you are a person who breaks everything you lay your hands on and are prone to dropping things out of your hands ( you admit you are a clumsy person!) then this might be a good thing for you. For most of us however, this is too expensive to make it a good deal. If they offered it at $19.95, it might be something to consider. Maybe.
Consumer advocates say to carefully limit your extended warranty purchases to big-ticket items.
When one buys a quality product (like my Kindle–love it!)you will rarely need to even glance at these profit-making offers. Spend your money elsewhere.

To buy or not to buy (an extended warranty), that is the question!

Bought a Gen2 Kindle for my wife (she loves it) WITH an extended warranty (“EW”), on which I based my rating, but to be completely accurate, its true rating won’t be known unless and until I ever have to make a claim. I have on order a Gen3 for my daughter and am debating (with myself) whether to order an EW for her Kindle. My general feeling about insurance (I know, I know, an EW isn’t insurance, but I think the decision making factors are the same for both) is that one ought to insure only those risks one can’t afford to assume. In other words, if you happen to be Bill Gates you don’t have to insure your $20+ million house because if it burns down you can afford to replace it. Insurance is always a bad deal because (1) the premium is based on risk of loss, which the insurance company knows very precisely; (2) the premium includes its cost of doing business; and (3) the premium includes its profit. Therefore, the premium cost is greater than the risk of loss and you should not buy insurance if you can afford to shell out the cost of buying a new Gen3 should it break or be damaged.

So, for $50 you/I get “protection” (I’ll use that word to avoid the “not insurance” argument) only for the second year, since the first year is covered by the warranty, plus Accidental Damage for two years. And keep in mind that the EW doesn’t seem to include loss or theft, and only includes one battery replacement. For that you/I would be paying MORE THAN 25% OF THE COST OF THE GEN3 KINDLE!!!! Are one out of every 3 or 4 Gen3 Kindles going to break in the second year or be damaged in the first two years? That seems extremely unlikely to me and, since I can afford another $180 if I lose my “bet,” I have made up my mind, as I write this, not to buy the EW and I will insure it myself. (I can call it insurance if I want to because I am the one insuring it. I can call it anything I want to, including “covering my own bet.”

I have had the EW item in and out of my cart for a while due to my indecision, but I am now going to remove it permanently. Even if I have to buy a new one within the next two years, I think I will have won the “probability game,” and I would not be surprised if a Gen4, at a lower price, will be available by the latter part of the two year period if I do have to buy a new one.

Thanks for helping me make up my mind.

BTW, in case you’re wondering why I don’t have an eReader, it’s because I listen to audiobooks when I commute. I found it difficult to read and drive at the same time.

WARNING: Be VERY careful who you buy this cable from!

The quality of this cable varies GREATLY depending on which seller you purchase from.

You may not realize but by just selecting Add to Cart you are actually getting a random seller selected by Amazon, based on a TON of different factors.

There are over 300 different sellers selling this cable and the quality varies dramatically, as does the price.

The main thing you should know is DO NOT just Add to Cart on the top of this page. You should definitely click on the link that says something like “302 new from $0.01″ and then take a look at the sellers and their feedback and pick the actual seller you want. DONT MAKE THE MISTAKE OF TAKING THE DEFAULT SELLER. You can also see where the products ship from.

All of these cables are NON GENUINE and are NOT APPLE Certified. You are taking a huge risk buying and using these cables. Just remember, you definitely get what you pay for.

Different Amazon vendors give different cables! Cellular 5 Star gave best. Importer520 cables were okay. Item44less were worst

I compared the cable I received with my original iPhone 4 and 3 cables. I cannot tell any differences other than a slightly different feel of the rubber/plastic material along the cable length, which by the way also differs between my genuine Apple iphone 4 and 3 cables. Another reviewer posted pictures on Amazon in which the cable in question appeared to have a slightly wider or larger connectors, but mine are identical in size, and appearance.

I am very happy with this purchase and will purchase several more.

After my initial great experience with the cable (that I ordered from Amazon’s merchant Cellular 5 Star), I ordered 3 more cables, and did not realize that the “default” merchant had changed to Importer520. I just received these 3 cables and they look similar to genuine Apple cables at quick glance, but on closer inspection, they all had surface blemishes and slight irregularities. They also had a suspicious looking “Designed by Apple in California Assembled in China” stamped on the cable length.

The cable from Cellular 5 Star was of very good quality that I could NOT distinguish from genuine Apple cables, but the ones from Importer520 are slightly inferior. The feel of the cable length material is good though, in that it is supple. It will coil and uncoil without keeping the bent shape.

I have contacted Importer520 to see if I can get a refund, but their stated return policy states that they will not refund shipping costs, which when I ordered was almost all the purchase price.

I purchased another “OEM” cable, this time from Item44Less and this cable is the worst of the bunch. The length of the cable is made out of a rigid plastic that does not bend like the more supple rubber-like material of the genuine Apple cables or even from Cellular 5 Star or Importer520.

I purchased another “OEM” cable, this time from C and J Accessories, which actually qualifies for Amazon Prime since their order fulfillment is through Amazon. This cable is clearly not authentic with the end that connects to the iPhone being larger by about 0.5 mm width and length. The other Amazon merchants cables were identical to design, but differed in quality. This cable actually differs in its design with its wider and thicker connector end. The length of the cable is also more plastic than a flexible rubber, compared to authentic Apple cables. I would say this is almost as bad as Item44Less.

I purchased a cable from Niceeshop and it looks genuine except that the cable length material is not as supple as the genuine Apple cables. The cable length material is not as rigid as the Item44Less cable, but more inflexible (retaining bends) than the Importer520 cables.

SUMMARY (Ranked in order of similarity to an authentic Apple cable)

1. Cellular 5 Star cables are the best and indistinguishable from my genuine Apple iPhone cables.
2. Importer520 is acceptable, but slightly inferior to Cellular 5 Star with some cosmetic blemishes. The cable length is made out of a high quality material.
3. Niceeshop is acceptable, but the cable length is not as supple as the Cellular 5 Star or Importer520.
4. C and J Accessories, although it qualifies for Amazon Prime, has its iPhone connector end as larger than the authentic one with a cheaper cable length material.
5. I would avoid Item44Less because of the rigid plastic cable material that does not bend and keeps the angular bent formation from its coiled position during shipping. The cable length material is the lowest quality (i.e. most plastic like) compared to the above four competitors.

I browsed Amazon for weeks teetering between about 3 different sellers for my replacement dock cables for charging/syncing my iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and 160Gig iPod Classic. I found these cables to be the least expensive of the ones with predominately “good” reviews. There were a few people who said they got the “real thing” when they ordered the cables as “OEM Apple cables”, a few people who said the cables were good but not “OEM Apple” quality, and finally there were a few who said to “stay away from these cables” because they tore up easily. I figured I’d chance it and order them. I am VERY PLEASED that I did. I ordered the cables 3/29/11 and was given a forecasted delivery date of 4/4 to 4/7/11. I received the cables today (4/1/11). VERY SPEEDY SHIPPING!!!! The cables were sent via USPS in a small brown envelope that was coated inside with bubble wrap. The cables were coiled up, much as anyone would coil a dock connector cable for storage with plastic wraps that were similar to the style wraps for the cables that come with all new Apple products. I was curious but kind of dreading opening the package because I just knew these cables would not fit my iPhone 4 with the bumper like just nearly every other “after market” cable I’ve seen. I was PLEASANTLY SURPRISED when I saw the design of these cables. They are as close to being “OEM Apple” cables as I’ve ever seen without actually being “Apple cables”. They fit snugly in all of my iDevices, charge the 4, 3GS, and Classic with NO ISSUES. I tested the sync speed of the cable and found it rivals the speed of the newest “Apple cable” that was included with my iPhone 4 purchase back in July 2010. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THESE CABLES!!!! If you’re an iPhone 4 owner who uses a bumper, GET THESE CABLES!!! THEY WORK!!! I’ve also taken “comparison” pictures and posted them to the “user pictures” on this item’s display. Hope my review is helpful and thanks to everyone who writes these reviews and to everyone who reads them. Together we can help each other make sure we get what we pay for!

Got these cables almost 5 months ago, one connects to my iMac, one to my wall charger, one to my XP machine at work, and one connects to my car charger. All are working and none have presented any issues so far. A friend was looking for similar cables but purchased them from a different seller and found they didn’t fit his iPhone 4 bumper. I thought on it a bit and found an excellent resolution. Just get an emery board (flexible fingernail file) and file down the edges of the 30 pin connector. PRESTO it fits now! SO if the seller does change the type of cable that is being shipped and you get one that doesn’t quite fit the iPhone 4 bumper, I can tell you (from experience) that it will not hurt to file the 30 pin connector to fit the bumper. Hope the review and this update are still helpful to people looking for new charge/sync cables.

***UPDATE 3/25/12***
Had the cables nearly a whole year now and still going strong. I haven’t checked this post in a while now but I noticed there were some questions about sync speed. My original Apple cable for my iPhone finally went out on me so I replaced it with one of these. I sync to a Mac, I have a 32GB iPhone 4, and I keep a lot of stuff on my phone. If I erase it and have to sync it from scratch, we’re looking a a couple of hours but just moving a few hundred songs around, some voice memos, pictures and stuff only takes a few minutes. The cables I got were definitely USB 2.0 cables. I also got one of the new iPads (3rd gen), it’s 64GB and I use these cables to sync and charge it with no problems. I’m about to order a couple of extras for my iPad now and this time, I’ll make sure to post the seller I get them from on the update about the new ones. Oh yeah, the cable I use in my car has gotten stepped on, spilled on, heat, cold, moisture, and even slammed in the door a couple of times… still going strong. No breaks, no kinks, no exposed wire at the ends, it’s taken a beating for nearly a year and still works like a charm. Still highly recommend these cables.
