7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. * VS Sennheiser HD650 (own) Sound: In general HD650 has a warmer tone signature while t50p has a “clearer” nature. t50p has the edge in high frequency clarity but not as powerful in the bass department. Note that this doesn’t mean it’s lacking in bass, just not as powerful. Also it’s bass performance is highly dependent on the position of the headphones. So make sure you have a proper sit given the on-ear setup. The soundstage of both headphones are excellent. HD650 has a feeling you’re listening in a sound room while t50p is more like in a concert hall. Comfort: Both headphones have their own merits. HD650 features a open design and is therefore more suitable for long listening sessions as your ears tend to get warm in closed headphone designs. However, t50p is much lighter than HD650 and the leatherette pads are actually more comfortable than HD650′s velvet pads. Ease of use: t50p has and impedance of 32ohm versus HD650′s 300ohm. Therefore it’s much easier to drive from your portable devices. That being said HD650 was never designed to be portable so this is not a dock against the HD650 Conclusion: HD650 is probably the more versatile headphone, which is great for a wider range of music and movies. t50p is more suited to vocals, jazz and classical music while HD650 has the edge in your thumping hip-hop, rock or pop. But given the size and design constraint of t50p, this is no small achievement! * VS Westone 4 (own) Sound: The sound signature in comparison with t50p is actually much closer than HD650. Both are leaning towards the neutral / clear side. The main difference is again in the soundstage, where Westone 4 has a smaller / closer image than t50p. I’d give a slight edge to t50p for better clarity though. Comfort: Since they’re completely different designs, it boils down to whether you’re comfortable with in-ear earbud designs. Suffice to say they’re both very comfortable in their own rights. Ease of use: Both of them are easy to drive for portable devices. Of course Westone 4 is much more portable being an earbud. But the t50p doesn’t take up a lot of space in your backpack either since the cans can be rotated 90 degrees and stay flat. Conclusion: The Westone 4 and t50p are my favorite portable headphones for mobile devices. I’d say t50p has a slight edge on the sound quality department but also a bit more inconvenient to carry than Westone 4. One thing to note is that Westone 4 is definitely the better airplane phone due to much better sound isolation. With t50p sound isolation is not sufficient for airplane rides. * VS Bowers & Wilkins P5 (demo) Sound: For those considering picking up the more expensive P5, I would definitely urge you take a serious look at t50p. I’d say the overall tonal clarity and stereo separation of the t50p are vastly superior to the P5, which is a shame since I’m a big fan of B&W’s HiFi offerings. But don’t be fooled by brand premium, I almost guarantee that you’ll prefer the sound of t50p over P5 after a few minutes of Mozart. Comfort & Ease of use: I’d give them a tie since their designs are actually quite similar Conclusion: For the price of P5, you can almost pick up 2 sets of t50p, while t50p provides, in my opinion, better sound. Enough said I guess * Final words The construction of the t50p is simply amazing! The aluminum headband and can cover oozes luxury. The sound quality versus size ratio is simply off the chart. It stands shoulder to shoulder to the much larger and more expensive HD650, which itself is an excellent headphone. For those who worry about sound leakage, there’s very little noticeable sound outside once the headphones have been PROPERLY sitted. Sound isolation is good but not enough for airplane rides. For those occasions, I’d recommend an in-ear headbuds like the Westone 4 instead. This is probably my smartest sound equipment purchase in recent years! Unfortunately, I decided to return these as they didn’t suit my intended use. I bought them hoping I can listen with it on my daily 2 hours of silent bus commute. They don’t have great sound isolation. So, if you like listening at around high volume’s the passengers next to you wouldn’t tolerate it for long. Same holds if you plan on using them in flights. But, if your intended use is in areas doesn’t demand silence by people around you then, these probably could be one of the best out there for the price. In the looks department, it will be tough to find a better looking one that can sound this good. |
