The View from Here focuses on the beauties and hardships of marriage; the betrayals and promises made amongst husbands and wives; and the grief of one woman haunted by secrets.

 Excellent

It was a captivating story and you could relate (even if only imagining the loss of your husband). The story sucks you in and you really get inside the heads of the main character and how she is feeling. I loved the twist at the end. I didn’t expect it. I had other ideas of how it might turn out.

 A surprise from the beginning! Full of heart and suspense.

One of the best things about ‘e-books’ is that it opens a marketplace for unknown Authors who may not have the big budget publishers promoting their talents. Rachel Howzell was unknown to me anyway and I’m glad to have made her acquaintance with this book. She breathes life into her characters in such a way that you feel you are having a conversation, she deals with the complexities of love and marriage and grief with grace, insight and humor. I try not to read reviews or even descriptions of a book too carefully before I dive in – and that’s how I began this book, no expectations. I was swept in and thoroughly engaged throughout and reveled in the discovery of the story as well as the Author. I would like to say that I’m a bit confused as to why this book would be labeled as “African-American Fiction” because that label could be seen as limiting (as most labels are). I didn’t find the story or characters to be uniquely black, the themes are universal! Read it – you won’t be disappointed and if you are like me you will try to seek out more “Indie Authors” as we do “Indie Rock bands”!

Prepare for suspense with a twist!

Rachel’s novel is a page turner from the very first chapter! ‘The View from Here’ is a riveting tale that demonstrates the complexities of our relationships while exploring the inner turmoil of remorse. A love story and a spine tingling ghost story all at the same time; this novel effectively delves into the bonds of love, loyalty, friendship and betrayal.
It isn’t difficult to empathize with Nicole, the main character in this novel. She is seeking resolution and absolution following the disappearance of her husband, while dealing with a torment which is almost too much for her to endure. She is plagued by supernatural events that are exacerbated by overmedication and exhaustion, while her friends endeavor to assist her through the ordeal. This well crafted and descriptive narrative will have you on the edge of your seat in suspense!
