With the release of the much anticipated Amazon Kindle 2 which is meant to be better and sleeker than the original, you may be asking yourself whether you ought to buy the upgraded version or stick with the general Kindle 1. First just looking at the two machines you’ll see a lot of differences. The Kindle 2 is a lot slimmer than it is predecessor at only 9mm thick and while it weighs the same as before it’s now having little impact to hold and carry around.

The screen size is likewise the same at 600 x 800 but the new model has better graphical capablenesses so that you’ll now get 16 shades of grey rather than the four of the introductory Kindle.

This makes the text on the screen more comfortable to read and rather sharp (less bleed into the screen). Of course the original version still had good readability and at primary glimpse you might not detect much of a difference, but after reading galore pages you’ll be grateful for the subtle crisper text. The background has also changed from a slight paper textured look in the primary to a smooth flat surface in the second.

While the Kindle 2 is meant to be more quickly at page turning and overall speed, we can’t say we noticed any substantial divergence among the two, after all it was never like Amazon’s original model was slow – it wasn’t.

The deviations that were substantial and sufficient to warrant giving careful consideration to an upgrade was the design changes in the newer model. The power switch is now conveniently at the top of the Kindle rather than the back which makes it much more comfortable to turn it on and off. The volume buttons have also been moved to a rocker switch now on the right hand side of the reader (rather than the bottom).

The navigation scheme is now much more intuitive with the ‘next’ button sitting conveniently where your thumb rests so you may effortlessly turn the page and it feels more natural.

Overall the divergences amidst Amazon’s Kindle 1 and 2 are subtle but do improve your ebook reading experience. So it’s up to you whether you want the latest and biggest or don’t mind the older version for up to $100 cheaper.

Great Variety for the Price

I ordered this set for my Amazon Kindle Fire. When I ordered it most accessories for the Kindle Fire had not been released yet and I needed something to protect my Kindle ASAP. I figured I couldn’t go wrong with this set considering the price. The leather folding case is my favorite and what I use the most. The other cases included are nice too. The screen protector was worthless. I couldn’t really figure out how to apply it, but that could have just been user error. It ended up in the trash after several failed attempts. A lot of the extra cords, cables, and earphones aren’t really something I’ll use. But for the price it is a good set.

Just Ok

This bundle leaves a lot to be desired. Not included in the pkg was any information was to what is actually included and on-line description with pictures is kind of vague. The things that are most helpful are probably the
Aux cable, charger adapters, the stylus, and the USB cables. The drawstring travel pouch is a joke — only about a 2×4 inch bag which will only hold 1-2 items. If a person were to put the leather case over the kindle with the clear case over it, getting it into the zip sleeve would be an extremely tight fit. Then the reading light broke when it came out of the box and will not clip to anything but with a light on the Fire, who needs the reading light in the first place? The leather case is open at the top so the Kindle could fall out unless you have the clear TPU case over it. Guess I should have researched better where I could have purchased the cables/adapters elsewhere to maybe save some cost — as I did for a better case cover and screen protector.
